Udemy, a global marketplace for learning and teaching online, today announced a completely redesigned course-taking experience that offers students a more immersive and rewarding way to learn. The new features further Udemy’s goal of helping its more than 10 million students across the globe gain new skills and achieve their goals through online learning.
Learning science, student feedback, and user research across the 40,000 courses available on Udemy helped shape the improved experience. The redesigned course player puts content front and center, and students have more ways than ever to tailor their learning. The course player enhances the overall course-taking experience where content is organized into sections composed of bite-sized lectures and practice, an approach that is consistent with best practices in learning sciences. New player controls enable students to determine the pace of the lecture, while a bookmarking feature allows students to annotate important sections for quick future reference.
‘We are just at the beginning of realizing the potential impact of online learning. We are committed to building the best experience to learn online and helping our 10 million students achieve their learning goals,’ said Rob Wong, VP of product at Udemy. ‘Our redesigned course-taking experience is the latest step toward realizing that vision, and we’re constantly exploring new ways to evolve our platform, ensuring students learn what they set out to achieve.’
The new features include:
A full-screen course player that minimizes distractions and allows students to fully immerse themselves in course material
New player controls and keyboard shortcuts, enabling students to easily speed up, slow down, or replay parts of lectures
A bookmarks feature that lets students annotate important sections of courses and save key passages to review at their convenience
A questions feature that helps students quickly find answers to their questions and view the most popular ones
The redesigned course-taking experience is also now available for the company’s Udemy for Business customers. Over 240,000 employees from companies including Lyft, PayPal, and Century 21 have access to this latest consumer-tested online learning experience to help them gain new skills and continue to grow and succeed in their workplace.
‘With the speed at which today’s technology evolves, it’s vital that employees of all companies have the tools to constantly refine their skills and keep up with the latest trends,’ says Darren Shimkus, GM and VP of Udemy for Business. ‘We believe the new course-taking experience will help workers across industries more effectively learn new skills to help them continually grow in the workplace.’
The new design comes on the heels of major business momentum in the first quarter of the year, including Udemy surpassing 10 million students worldwide, as well as the recent acquisition of Talentbuddy, an interactive learn-to-code platform which will help bolster Udemy’s experiential learning capabilities. Udemy also partnered with Microsoft in January to further promote youth employment in the Middle East and Africa, as the company continues to deliver on its mission of helping anyone build the life they imagine through online learning.
