From modest beginings, supplying their own range of borehole and gear pumps to the market, the two founders, Mr AJ Hindry and H Day, soon saw the gap in the market for a quality centrifugal pump. Successfully establishing themselves as leaders in the South African market, in 1952 they formed a partnership with Allweiler AG, the oldest pump company in Germany. This partnership continues to flourish today, seeing Rapid Allweiler established as a leading pump manufacturer and supplier in the South African market. Caroline Houghton, Mr Hindry’s granddaughter, took over the reigns as Managing Director in 2004. Today, Rapid Allweiler boasts some 2000m2 of office, manufacturing and conferencing space, servicing branches in Cape Town and Durban as well as a nation-wide dealer network. Pumps and the way they have been made have stayed the same for may year, of course there are always smarted ways of machining and lean manufacturing that Rapid Allweiler have applied to its business, but most technology come with the system it adds to the pumps and products. This includes variable speed drives so they can use less electricity and monitoring systems, like the IM 1000 which the firm offer that monitors bearing, temperature, vibration, flow rate and leakage remotely. Fundamentally, Rapid Allweiler’s product range is specifically engineered to meet market demands with over 220 years of combined national and international pump and engineering experience.
