Jul23121 MEA | African Excellence Awards 2025 23 Apr25272 British School of the Year 2025 – North Africa & Curriculum Innovation Award 2025 Situated on two campuses La Soukra for our primary school and El Kram for secondary school, Tunisia, the British International School of Tunis (BIST) is an inclusive, ambitious school offering a high-quality British education. Allowing pupils from the Early Years through to Sixth Form to thrive, BIST follows England’s National Curriculum to a T, culminating in the completion of IGCSEs and A-Levels. Pupils of many nationalities and backgrounds call BIST home, with local and international families trusting the school on the back of its academic excellence. We caught up with Hiba Adouni to learn more about this nurturing environment. Delivering engaging academic programmes that are grounded in the English National Curriculumbut tailored to the unique needs of international learners, the British International School of Tunis goes beyond quality education to see every child afforded pastoral care and holistic wellbeing support. Outside of lessons, BIST delivers such rich extra-curricular programmes as sports, arts, and leadership opportunities, helping pupil s to not only thrive in the present but also work towards realising their ambitions once they leave school. “Through highly qualified staff, small class sizes, and a collaborative culture, BIST is committed to developing confident, compassionate, and capable young people ready to thrive in a complex and interconnected world.” At every level of its schooling, BIST is based around the four core values of Bravery, Imagination, Self-discipline, and Tolerance. The team apply these to their work on a daily basis, showcasing them through interactions with their colleagues as well as pupil s. BIST’s values-led education also prides itself on promoting respect, integrity, resilience, and curiosity at every turn, shaping the environment of this awardwinning institution whilst also supporting it across its mission of always moving forwards. This is something that BIST’s aspirational statement – “Work Hard Dream Big” – showcases perfectly, and this has remained at the heart of what this community has strived for since it was introduced following pupils’ initiatives, the Year 3 class specifically, in 2022. These talks saw BIST outline exactly what it is that it aims to be, as well as the standards it would rigorously uphold and the ambitious goals it would strive to achieve. On the back of all this, Hiba proudly told us: “The British International School of Tunis aims to be a leading school in MENA dedicated to educating kind, innovative, and brave children and young people to their highest academic and creative potential.” Furthermore, BIST is the only international school of its kind in Tunisia to have received accreditation from the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), and it is also a member of Britus Education, a network of distinctive schools defined by a commitment to quality education with a community focus. With these feathers in its cap, BIST’s dedication to providing an education that is not only highly academic – but also practical and designed for life – is unrivalled. This can be seen further through some of its unique initiatives. Over the past few years, BIST has introduced new elements into its curriculum to further diversify the opportunities it provides to pupil s. For example, many pupils have had the chance to work with local businesses, learning skills such as customer service and how to understand everchanging market dynamics. Beyond this, the integration of life skills into BIST’s teachings – such as critical thinking and financial literacy – see pupil s provided with the tools they need to navigate everyday challenges. Reflecting on this, Hiba explained: “Through these innovative learning initiatives, we are not only enhancing the educational experience of our pupils but also fostering a culture of collaboration and growth within our local economy. By preparing our pupils for real-life challenges, we are contributing to a more skilled workforce and a vibrant community.” BIST’s dedication to this cause remains stronger than ever, reflected through some of the plans it has in place for the rest of 2025 and beyond. These include launching Passion Projects for pupils in KS3, giving them the chance to explore their interests through self-directed projects; offering dedicated form time to boost social and emotional learning and see pupil s build relationships with their form tutors and peers; as well as enhancing its career guidance programme to include workshops and guest speakers. Ultimately, this unique curriculum, – combined with its status as the only BSO and COBIS-certified school in Tunisia – makes this fully accredited British school in North Africa more than deserving of a place in this programme.
