MEAM Qatar Business Awards 2018
16 MEA MARKETS / 2018 Qatar Business Excellence Awards , BIMTEC is an Engineering Management Office whose technical background and knowledge reflect its early establishment abroad and its gathering of a group of professionals from the four corners of the world, with extensive experience in consultancy, development, design, construction and project management, and facilities management. We spoke to Pedro Lima to learnmore about the firmand the range of innovative solutions it offers to its valued clients. Best BIM Consultancy 2018 & Award for Excellence in BIM Implementation Since its inception in 2011, BIMTEC’s vision has been to create a specialised BIM/EMO firm that bridges the gap between theory and practice, based on our market requirements. As such, the firm has been working in and influencing the BIM market in the middle east region since it began, through the deployment of specialised resources to governmental institutions, owners, design consultants and contractors. Today, BIMTEC’s portfolio is shared among highly-specialised consultancy covering the assessment and implementation of BIM, BIM project management, production of documents, requirements or templates and through the production of engineering information on all possible products from BIM, such as drawings, BOQs, construction methodologies, etc. Additionally, BIMTEC has also been recognised for its ability to innovate through heavy investment in technology, research and development. Pedro discusses the myriad of lessons that the firm has learned over the years and how it applies these to make sure that its clients receive the support and service they need. “Since our establishment, at BIMTEC we have been QA180002 introducing technologies through our engineering offerings such as BIM and Laser Scanning to owners, developers, contractors, authorities, and design consultants and the results are unquestionable. Our clients are from different industries such as Real Estate, Healthcare, Sports Venues and Infrastructure, and they are all convinced that our services are contributing for the overall success of their enterprises. “The common mistake made in our industry today is that clients write their requirements with no allowance for the supply chain, resulting in personal experiences of individuals to review and direct the process which may be correct or incorrect depending on the appointed personnel. The idea we bring is to industrialise the process as far as possible and to spend effort on developing the tools needed by contractors and subcontractors to deliver their projects seamlessly, without implying large learning curves for any company. Whilst doing so, BIMTEC fully understands the liability implications this brings in and shall ensure - through its commercial recommendations and advisement on contracts - that this liability can be mitigated and maintained with the information authors.” Being based in Qatar has offered the firm a range of benefits. Qatar and the Middle East are experiencing an enormous amount of investment in the construction sector which has attracted construction players from all continents. In order to meet client’s requirements and highest construction standards the market demanded contractors and consultants to apply the latest technologies and standards on their projects. Therefore, being born at the cornerstone of a booming construction industry really helped BIMTEC to shorten the learning curve and to experience a solid growth over the past few years. Drawing on his vast knowledge of the construction market, both in the Middle East and internationally, Pedro discusses the latest developments it has seen. “The construction industry is well known for its complexity, comprising a diverse range of stakeholders from clients and professional bodies to contractors and other specialised entities. The unique culture and methodologies practised during construction programmes require highly specialised research and understanding to enable measures with a positive impact on its natural (dis)order. “A commonly known problem relates to the separation of design and production environments, which is far greater than most other production industries. The ‘single-product’ nature of the industry, due to its design, location or budget, makes it harder to mitigate the gap between the design studio and the construction site. However, the construction industry is well- known for its ability to deliver the most challenging and innovative engineering and human project matches, yet this goes along with a reluctant feeling of underachievement supported by low profitability and general underdevelopment in many key areas. “Integrated processes between the supply chain teams and innovation are areas commonly recognised as critical to driving productivity - through information management, enhancing communications, collaboration and transparency. Certainly, in such a bulky and slow-paced industry, strategic change and innovation from concept to execution is critical to success.” Modernising the industry requires that the supply chain is integrated, and that risk and value be managed in order to improve buildability, reduce accidents and eliminate waste. An unconventional understanding of project value – one not based on the lowest contracting prices - has widely been mooted as necessary, as such models fail to provide value for money in terms of either initial costs or
